Inside Columbus city limits a fence needs a zoning clearance from Building and Zoning Services before it goes in, and every suburb around it has its own office and its own height and setback limits. We pull the permit as part of the job — this page is so you know which office it goes to and what your city allows before you settle on a height.

How the process runs in the Columbus metro

1. We confirm which jurisdiction you are in

Columbus addresses can sit inside a suburb, a township, or the city itself, and each has different limits. The parcel record settles it before anything is filed.

2. We file the zoning clearance or permit

With a site plan showing the fence line, height, and material. Suburb turnaround is usually a few days; Columbus proper can take longer.

3. We file the OHIO811 locate

At least 48 hours before digging, as Ohio law requires. Utilities come out and mark their lines in paint and flags.

4. Your HOA, if you have one

Dublin, New Albany, Powell and Pickerington subdivisions almost all have one, with an approved-materials list. That approval is yours to obtain and sits on top of the city permit.

5. We build to what was approved

Posts set in concrete below the frost line and clear of every marked utility.

Permit authority and height limits by suburb

Researched from each city’s own code. Blank means we have not verified that figure for that city yet — not that no limit exists. Limits change and vary by zoning district, so we confirm yours before we build.

What happens if you skip the permit

The city can order the fence removed or lowered at your cost, and a fence built over the height limit is the usual case. Unpermitted work also surfaces at closing, which turns a weekend project into a problem the week you are trying to sell.

A neighbour complaint is what triggers most enforcement, and property-line disputes are the other. Both are avoidable — the permit is cheap and it is on the estimate anyway.

Historic and architectural review districts

German Village, Victorian Village, Italian Village and the Bexley and Worthington historic districts add a design review on top of the zoning clearance. Material, height and sometimes color are restricted — vinyl and chain link are frequently out, wood and ornamental metal in.

It adds time rather than difficulty. Build the review into your schedule and pick from what the district approves, and it is the same job.
